"Dargason" is an exceptionally comfortable,
well-equipped and well-maintaned cruising ketch with
good sea-going qualities and economical operating costs.
It is a 40' (12 metre) ketch, superbly designed by
Sparkman and Stephens, and sturdily built in Canada by
Northstar Yachts in 1974.
It was owned by the builder for one season and then
went to the first purchaser, who sailed it on the Great
Lakes for 22 years. The present owners, Michael
and Robin Lynch, have been in possession for 9
years. During that time, the vessel has sailed
Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, the Erie Canal and the Hudson
River, the Intracoastal Waterway to Florida, the western
Atlantic and has cruised in Cuba and the Bahamas.
It is currently located at Bronte Harbour in Oakville,
Ontario.
"Dargason" is a cutter-rigged ketch with
centre cockpit and an overall length of 40'. The
beam is almost 14' and with a draft of 6' 4", it
tracks very well. The accommodations are
comfortable for two couples, double beds in both forward
and aft cabins each with a toilet and sink, with a
shower in the aft head. There are also two settees
in the main cabin, which can be used for sleeping
berths. There is an internal passageway to the aft
cabin as well as access to it from the cockpit.
All of the woodwork is teak, with teak and holly sole in
the main and forward cabins. The main cabin
cushions are upholstered in navy blue.
A new Yanmar 4JHTE turbo diesel was installed in 1990
and since then, has accumulated approximately 1,500
hours. This diesel will power the boat at up to 7
1/2 knots via a two-blade 18" propeller, but at 6
1/2 knots, will consume fuel at only 3/4 of a gallon
(US) per hour.
The hull was painted with Awlgrip
in 1997 and
the anti-fouling paint, Pettit Trinidad SR, was
reapplied in March 2005. The exterior woodwork is in good condition.
The cockpit has a screened full enclosure in
Sombrella Flag Navy Blue. The destroyer style wheel is teak rimmed
and there is a full set of cockpit cushions. All
of the opening ports, the three overhead hatches and
companionways are screened.
